Bergamotte Esperen pear
Pyrus communis
Bergamotte Esperen was developed in the 1830s by Major Pierre Joseph Esperen, a fruit enthusiast from Malines in northern Belgium (now more usually known by its Flemish name, Mechelen).
The first half of the 19th century was a high point in the development of the modern dessert pear, with amateur enthusiasts like Esperen vying to produce the richest and sweetest flavors. Esperen had joined the army in his 20s during the Napoleonic wars, but retired to Malines to pursue his interest in fruit breeding.
