Red June apple

Red June, also known as Carolina Red June, is a traditional early southern apple.  The fruit is smaller, round to round-oblong in shape with a deep red skin covering yellow fruit.  The flesh is white with red staining and has a mildly brisk taste unusual for early apples.  Historically it was used for pies and cider as well.

Trees tend to bloom late for an early apple and are heavy bearers.  There is a tendency toward biennial bearing, and yet also has the unusual ability to rebloom later in the season and produce a second, albeit lighter, fall crop of apples.  Red June is susceptable to apple scab and cedar rust.

I have a tree of this variety in my orchard . It is very reliable and produces a good crop of smaller apples which begin to ripen in late June and lasts to the third or fourth week of July. Very good flavor for a early apple.
