Empress plum

Prunus domestica

Empress, also widely-known as Blue Imperatrice, is an unusually late-season dark blue / purple European plum. The plums have a sweet sugary flavor, but the  golden yellow flesh is quite dry.

The plums are "persistent", and if not picked will hang on the tree well into late fall. They can also be kept in a fridge for several weeks.

Blue Imperatrice is believed to have originated in Europe in the 18th century, and was eventually exported to North America where it is usually known as Empress.
