These trees have been untended and need serious work on the trees themselves and cutting back the surrounding growth but there is enough "good" tree there to warrant further investigation. Since these trees are on conservation land in a wildlife corridor, I need to check into and possibly get permission to clear out surrounding brush, prune and treat these trees. Last fall I harvested some scions and kept them in the fridge as instructed. This spring I grafted about 12 shoots onto my crab apple and red apple trees. Three (3) of them took hold, blossomed and fruited! Most of the infant apples dropped off as I thought they would. All three are still alive and growing and one even has a 1" dia apple on it! Only my second attempt at grafting. Last year I think I started too late and was unsuccessful.
