Owner's comments

This tree was fully grown in the early 1900’s from old photographs. It has a hollow trunk which was filled with concrete (as they used to do in olden times to protect them from blowing down in gales). The heavy cropping has been unaffected by this and the apples are the most delicious. It is probably a parent of the Crawley Beauty variety by its ancient date (although identified as such by Wisley). The apples keep well in a dedicated fridge almost until the next cropping, if not all eaten or given away, and frozen stewed apple fill the freezer.
