We put this tree in 34 years ago when we moved here on a surge of optimism as this is really the last place to try and grow fruit - difficult climate and poor soil. My husband was brought up in Worcestershire and remembered the Newton as a lovely apple both for cooking and eating. It has managed to grow to about 15 foot. It has been neglected but seems to thrive on it. Showing it's age but still produces an amazing crop of wonderful apples. Last year's lasted through until April, stored outside in plastic buckets covered with some old sacks in a cowshed through a -18 degree frost! The apples cook beautifully and the mass of blossom is a joy in the spring. We did put a Bramley in at the same time but that did not survive.
