Owner's comments

This tree is in the garden of a house dated to 1875 and is very old going by the size and shape. It was identified at Ely Apple fair on 17 October 2009 as being nearest to a Crawley Beauty. It is dual purpose, red striping over a grass green background, very white grainy flesh, very dry on cooking (needs water added or it burns easily), fantastic flavour balance, quite a sharp dessert apple. Some fruits are very large indeed but this tree is currently shaded. 2010 - the shading has all been removed prior to blossom, 7 leylandiis and tree ivys all cleared. will be interesting to see what efect this has on fruit ripening. This tree has three main branches, two of them noted to be hollow near trunk and rotting.
