Codling moth emerging from fallen apple
Apple enthusiast Barry Potter sent us a series of photos of a codling moth larva emerging from a fallen Grenadier apple.
He was in his orchard when the over-ripe apple fell from the tree and noticed the characteristic hole of the codling moth. As he watched, the larvae emerged from the apple.
Barry hypothesises that the larva is programmed to exit the hole when it feels the thud of the apple hitting the ground. It can then crawl away from the apple and get under cover for hibernation before the fruit is eaten by foraging animals.
