Rubens (UK NFC) apple
Malus domestica
A dry and fairly soft apple with a noticeable hint of bananas, and a very attractive old-fashioned appearance.
Rubens is a particularly attractive Cox-style apple, originating from the Netherlands in the 1950s. The flavour is sweet and pleasant but not particularly remarkable. The flesh is quite soft and dry.
Not to be confused with a new variety from Italy with the same name which has just started to be promoted to supermarkets - see Rubens®.
