Elton Beauty apple
Malus domestica
An attractive early-season English apple, related to James Grieve.
Parentage: James Grieve and Worcester Pearmain
Origin: England
Introduced: 1950s
Season: Sept
Apple cultivar ID: 114200
Elton Beauty is a sharp, very juicy, mid-September apple. If that sounds rather like
James Grieve, it should do - Elton Beauty is a cross between James Grieve and
Worcester Pearmain. Elton Beauty also has the shape and solidity of James Grieve, as well as the soft glistening flesh, but the intense red/crimson colour is from Worcester Pearmain.
Unusually, Elton Beauty has siblings.
Katy, a popular early garden and commercial variety from Sweden comes from the same James Grieve and Worcester Pearmain parentage, and it is a fascinating experience to try the two side by side. (This is not easy to achieve, Elton Beauty is comparatively rare, but Katy is often available from farmers' markets in early September).
Lord Lambourne also shares the same parents.
